The Perugia urban freeway is a four-lane by-pass with six exits, approximately 11 kilometres long, a large part of which consists of viaducts and tunnels. The Umbrian regional authorities requested the Department of Transport to carry out a study prior to installing a computerized traffic-monitoring system, which should be operational by the end of the 1980s. The paper examines: the functions performed by the system; the software necessary for its management; and the architecture and components of the system.
