The use of a computer to monitor camera images and draw an operators attention to a particular scene when an abnormality in traffic behaviour is detected would have considerable utility. The aim of this research is to develop an algorithm whereby some description, albeit qualitative, of the current traffic state over the image could be obtained directly from image data. An analysis of the effect of camera position has been carried out to determine over what range such a system could be expected to work and to offer some guidance as to the best camera position.
