In Hungary, a unified system of traffic surveys has been developed gradually, the elements of which are as follows: general traffic census of the national road system; general traffic census of the local road system; monitoring traffic flows on the national road system; continuous observation of traffic volumes at border crossing points; country-wide origin-destination survey; and other regular or ad-hoc surveys. Changes in the survey methods are characterised by two main tendencies: improving data collection and processing methods; and increasing the compatibility of different survey types.
