Describes briefly the Department of Transport's present system of traffic data collection in Britain, and considers how it is hoped to develop the system in the future both to improve the accuracy of the estimates to provide improved services to their customers. The main 'customers' are those sections of the Department involved in the planning and maintenance of the road system, and in the monitoring of road accidents. The main effort is, therefore, designed to provide estimates of traffic by type of road and by type of vehicle for Great Britain as a whole.
