The complexity of today's weapon systems, and in particular electronic warfare (EW) systems, continues to grow. The number of test modes, conditions and parameters have expanded well beyond the point where hardware against hardware testing using simulated threat radar and command, control and communications (C3) systems on outdoor ranges alone is sufficient. To meet this challenge, the services are developing hybrid simulation test facilities. At these, which typically are indoor facilities, full-scale hardware can be interfaced with computer driven simulations of a force-on-force electronic order of battle from high frequency (HF) communications to millimeter wave and electrooptical/infrared (EO/IR) tracking and intercept systems.
