Despite the lack of specific standards for ruggedised and militarised computers, the Government, and its suppliers are not working entirely without guidance. Several government specifications have become de facto standards by virtue of appearing over and over again in procurement proposals and contracts. The three most commonly mentioned are Mil-Std-800D (shock and vibration), Mil-Std-461B (EMI) and NACSIM 5100A (Tempest). These specifications alone cannot come close to defining performance requirements for a military computer system. One of the many tasks assigned to the Next-Generation Computer Resource Committee is to combine the individual specifications into a minimum, or baseline, standard for ruggedised and militarised systems.
