Aegis is a combination of complex radars, computers, missiles and missile control systems. It was made to track and destroy small, fast targets in hostile environments such as severe weather or where countermeasure systems are present. As an area defense system, it reportedly can shield an entire task force by tracking up to 200 airborne, surface and subsurface targets at ranges that can exceed 250 nautical miles. Targets can be arranged according to the immediacy of the threat each poses. According to RCA's Missile and Surface Radar Division, Moorestown, NJ, the system's prime contractor, Aegis, 'was developed as a total ship combat system, rather than the traditional approach to integrate a series of weapon and electronic subsystems into a ship'.
