The status of electronic applications in freight trucks is reviewed, with emphasis on communications and logistics, diagnostic systems, vehicle guidance, the drive train, and computer-assisted procedures. The author then examines in detail the European program Prometheus (Program for European traffic with highest efficiency and unprecedented safety) which is intended to perform basic research for advanced developments in car and traffic technology. Areas of Prometheus described include PRO-NET which is a proposed intervehicle communication network, PRO-ROAD, a system for onboard-to-roadside support system communication, PRO-CAR, an onboard computer system for driver support, and PRO-CHIP (Computer Hardware for Intelligent Processing), a cooperative IC development effort focusing on sensors, buses, processors, displays, and actuators.
