European automotive manufacturers have initiated research work together with electronic and supplier companies and traffic engineers and administrations with the intention of creating an integrated technical approach by using the foreseeable possibilities of electronics and informatics both in vehicles and for roadside equipment to increase traffic safety, environment compatibility, and efficiency. This effort is reviewed briefly. Related issues discussed are safe driving systems, communication, guidance and traffic control. The future outlook in this area is discussed.
