The Maverick missile system has progressed from simple TV guidance, to laser guidance, to imaging IR guidance. The original model of the missile, the AGM-65A, and its successor the AGM-65B, uses a TV guidance system. Hughes Electronics Corp. later built the AGM-65E laser Maverick to meet the needs of the Marine Corps. Laser Mavericks can be used against targets that are illuminated by laser target designators from the ground on air. The latest versions of Maverick use a passive imaging IR system. They can be used during the day or night.
