The Stinger began as an outgrowth of the Redeye missile system. The Redeye (FIM-43A) is a SAM that was developed by the US military in the mid-1960s. It uses IR seekers, and is limited to engaging the rear aspect of targets. The built-in identification friend-or-foe (IFF) subsystem operates in both Mode 3 and Mode 4. Thus, it can discriminate hostile targets from friendly targets or civilian targets.
