NTT has been actively researching and developing a multibeam mobile satellite communication system to provide mobile services for ships within the 200 nautical mile zone around Japan and for land vehicles outside the terrestrial cellular system. As one step in the development of a future system, NTT has participated in the EMSS program. The authors describe the system configuration of NTT's EMSS program and preliminary results, including ship Earth's station antenna switching, channel performance monitoring, and bit error rate characteristics.
