The first US solar race car to compete in a solar race, Tour de Sol, was Solectria III, which is described as an inexpensive, fairly simple vehicle that has the advantages of small size and light weight. The vehicle finished the race but was not competitive due to poor aerodynamics, low battery capacity and lack of efficient control system. Features of later, improved models are reported.
