Some of the considerations involved in the development of worldwide aeronautical satellite communication services are discussed. The author examines: system design options; choice of voice system architecture; the need for satellite spot beams and high-gain aircraft antennas; voice activation advantages; EIRP distribution advantage (ground to air); Erland efficiency; intermodulation; aircraft high-power amplifiers; and number of channel units.
