A brief outline is presented of INMARSAT's Standard-C mobile satellite communication system planned for global introduction in 1989. Standard-C is an advanced packet data communications system based on the use of low-cost, compact mobile earth stations. A description of the system architecture, services and mobile earth station features is provided. The various channel types and their functions and characteristics are described. The basic call setup procedures and a brief description of the enhanced group call data broadcast service are presented.
