The logic required to smartly initialize the state and covariance of a missile track is presented. It is shown through simulation results that the proposed methods-correlation of the air-to-air missile angle measurement report to a launching platform or use of evaluation and owncraft altitude for surface-to-air launches-can greatly enhance the quality of track initialization. These methods supply an estimate of the critical missing initialization parameter, range. The details of implementation of such an initialization scheme are described along with the underlying assumptions and sensitivities of the algorithm to these assumptions.
