The TOAS terrain- and obstacle-avoidance sonar was developed to interface high-information-rate acoustic signals to artificial-intelligence systems under development for autonomous underwater vehicles. This lightweight, low-power sonar uses is preformed beams to acquire forward-looking obstacle and terrain returns which are processed by the vehicle to provide steering information. Imbedded processors control settable parameters of the system to adapt acoustic functions to various vehicle environments.
