Two examples are presented in which eigenstructure assignment was utilized to design flight control laws. It is shown that minimizing eigenvalue sensitivity does not always yield improved stability robustness. Conversely, maximizing the minimum singular value of the return difference matrix does not always yield reduced eigenvalue sensitivity. It may be possible that a mode-decoupled approach will not yield an acceptable design. Thus, further research is required to obtain an eigenstructure design methodology which achieves simultaneous specifications on performance, robustness, and sensitivity.
