Radioactivity induced in detectors by cosmic rays and trapped protons limits the sensitivity of spaceborne gamma-ray spectrometers. 1-D transport calculations are used to analyze the influence of neutron shielding on the radioactive background induced in NaI by neutron-capture reactions. The use of thermalizing absorbers to surround central detector elements is found to be counterproductive. Full 3-D transport codes have been applied to the trapped-proton instance, verifying both the absolute levels of this component and the negative influence of neutron shielding, 1987 Annual Conference on Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects, 28-31 July 1987, Snowmass Village, CO, USA
