The high altitude, long endurance (HALE) aircraft is described, and its appls. are discussed. The HALE can serve the needs of satellite surrogate missions, continuous battlefield surveillance, communications and data link relay, command and control, air defense initiative, and border patrol. The evolution of the HALE vehicle is described, and the related technologies are considered.
