The authors have developed an expert system to assist engineers in selecting adhesives for aerospace hardware design. A prototype built during the first year will serve as a baseline for an engineering material selection system. The objective is to demonstrate a practical application of an expert system that captures supportability rules and applies them to the material selection process. The authors discuss how the expert system is used by experts and nonexperts to solve adhesive-selection problems that exhibit competing design criteria.
