Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly expanding field of Computer Science that offers tremendous benefits in the area of weapon systems development and support. However, with these benefits come the added difficulties of supporting a new software technology unlike any the Air Force has supported in the past. This paper will acquaint the reader with Artificial Intelligence in general and Knowledge Based Systems in particular, and will describe the expected benefits, outline potential applications, and assess the impact on AFLC of supporting Artificial Intelligence technology. Several problem areas are identified; potential solutions are proposed for some areas, others are left for future resolution.
