A description is given of the prototype of an intelligent navigational assistant (INA) currently being developed for use with the US Army HQDA decision resource database (DRD). The INA provides an easy-to-use interface for casual users of the DRD. It accepts queries in a moderately unstructured browse mode and constructs an SQL statement to be processed by the DRD host. The authors outline the architecture of a larger AI-based database support system and show how this prototype fits into the overall plan. The INA is presented, and the technical approach to interface management and query resolution is reviewed.
