The military standard, aircraft internal time division command/response multiplex data bus-MIL-STD-1553 was issued in 1973. The need for a standard was brought about by the increasing requirement for avionics and other sub-systems to share information in order to increase mission capability. Point to point wiring schemes were becoming unacceptably complex and added greatly to the weight of the aircraft. The current revision of the Standard MIL-STD-1553 B (commonly referred to as just 1553 B), issued in 1978, is now widely used, not only in aircraft but in ships, fighting vehicles, ground based installations and missiles. The reasons for its popularity and the framework of 1553 are discussed.
