The Air Defence Initiative seeks multispectral space-based sensors to modernise the USA defences against aerodynamic threats. Of several scientific disciplines under investigation, space-based radar and IR appear to offer the most immediate payoff. To reduce the vulnerability of a few highly capable space-based radars, the Air Force plans to examine the deployment of small radars aboard a distributed sparse array of spacecraft. Under this concept, each radar would act as a larger whole; for example a swarm of phased array could form a space-based radar system. In comparison with radar, IR technology offers a major tactical advantage.
