The author discusses the use of artificial intelligence in enabling a satellite to detect and identify an anomalous condition, and perform corrective procedures. This would improve mission reliability and reduce the need for highly skilled personnel. A diagnostic system for a satellite attitude control subsystem (ACS) has been developed. This performs fault detection and fault isolation, using hypothetical reasoning and goal-directed reasoning.
