Successfully implementing complex military computing applications, such as command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I), requires a full understanding and appreciation of military needs. Various platform environments, including air, land, sea and undersea and sensors, such as infrared, sonar and radar, require the appropriate hardware and software system solutions. Key to the success of a hierarchical computing solution will be a common environment at the operating system and network level. The military community appears to be migrating toward UNIX. UNIX now is supported on hardware ranging from the very high end supercomputers and mini-supercomputers to workstations and personal computers.
