Examines the emerging technologies of artificial intelligence (AI) and potential operational capabilities. The development of machines that are able to respond to voice commands and eye motion signals is encouraged. The super cockpit is one example of such a system. Three challenges face the USAF Aeronautical Systems Division as it looks toward the 21st century. First, it must decrease acquisition and life cycle costs, as well as the time it takes to deliver a system to the field. Secondly it must improve the productivity of the work force. Thirdly, it must meet the technological challenges involved, including issues such as real time processing. knowledge representation, reasoning techniques and performance testing.
