Ship and aircraft manufacture requires modern technologies based on composite materials, which increases the vulnerability of electronic equipment subjected to an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The use of a 3D finite-difference method to simulate a natural EMP, such as lightning, is limited by excessive CPU time. Improvements are introduced to describe these phenomena using large computation time windows with reduced CPU cost. Numerical results are given when the hull of a cruiser is subjected to lightning.
