To prevent ground forces exploiting the hours of darkness for attack, movement and resupply ground-attack aircraft should be able to operate at night and in poor weather. The author presents a forward-looking infra-red (FLIR) system where the image is superimposed on the real world as seen through the cockpit head-up display. The FLIR architecture is described and key features of the system are looked at.
