The demands of space exploration have led to new technologies. Many of these have become useful outside the space program. Some of them have shown themselves to be adaptable in medicine and physical rehabilitation or have in other ways been to advantage to ill or physically disabled or handicapped persons. Some examples of adaptations of space technology are described: a space-age wheel/chair; a motor vehicle steering and control system for quadriplegics; a wearable, real time speech intelligibility aid; a program implantable medication system; an automated implantable defibrillator.
