Traffic light control is a field of research in which optimization is a difficult task. In the course of history several systems have been developed to deal with the rapidly changing traffic conditions. The main objective of a traffic signal scheduler (TSS) is to optimize the traffic flow. The crucial part is thus the optimization of the schedules. There are multiple optimization criteria by which this optimization can be driven. A traffic signal controller (TSC), also called traffic light controller, is a procedure that regulates the switch times of traffic lights based on the schedules received from the TSS. An important task of the controller is exception handling, for instance in situations where it is allowed to skip traffic lights if no vehicle is waiting. A TSC continuously monitors the traffic information and gives switch instructions if necessary. In this paper the authors describe an example of the application of evolutionary algorithms to the problem of optimizing the control of traffic lights at a crossing in the Netherlands. First a problem description is given. Then the implementation of the evolutionary algorithm and the simulation environment is described. After this the performance of the evolutionary algorithm in comparision with the traditional controller is given and the paper ends with some conclusions and remarks.
