In this paper the authors present an advanced concept for the surge control of natural gas compressors and for its interaction with the process control. The concept, based on a fuzzy surge controller, is favourable as surge, or more precisely, disengaging the compressor, can be prohibited in any situation. On the other hand, it is not necessary to slow down the process controller or to set the surge-control line far away from the surge-limit line. The key to the solution was to make the surge controller react flexibly just before the operating point reaches the surge-control line, and to optimize the interaction with the process controller. In the 'stable' region, far away from the surge-control line, the process controller is almost time-optimal. Finally, it should be stressed that a patent is pending for the concept presented here and that it will be implemented in future control systems of Ruhrgas AG.
