After a short overview of the CHAMP satellite and its AOCS a new approach for safe mode attitude control, using simply a 2-axis sun sensor data and magnetic coils for control torque generation, is presented. The derived measurement and control algorithms are very simple and insensitive to variations of the spin rate. The performance of the controller has been demonstrated by simulations. Once the satellite is spinning with spin axis orientation towards the sun, the benefits of the proposed concept are: - stability of the spin axis orientation, i.e. maintenance of sun orientation during eclipse without any additional sensor - no fuel consumption in safe mode, - full autonomy. The measurement algorithms allow simple high accuracy estimation of sun sensor misalignment angles in two axes. Therefore the algorithms are also well suited for spinning satellites with the requirement for accurate spin axis orientation towards the sun.
