An integrated multi-train simulator software package for both AC and DC railway systems has been implemented using the method of nodal voltage circuit analysis. The software, developed using an object-oriented approach, is a useful tool during both plant design and plant enlargement or modernisation. The adoption of this modelling method requires the establishment of some databases to represent the actual railway facilities, each railway network component is been considered as an object having its own attributes. After obtaining the models of the fundamental elements describing the railway network and its behaviour, the most suitable method for solving the electrical grid is evaluated so as to minimise computation time and storage requirements. As a practical example of the proposed software, the results of some numerical simulations for the power supply system used for the Italian high speed train are reported, this is a 2x25 kV electricified traction system with autotransformers (AT).
