The availability of accurate geographical positioning satellite systems and easy access to relatively inexpensive communications has opened up the opportunity for real-time monitoring and control of motor vehicles on the ever busier road system. These new technologies are now being applied for a variety of applications including vehicle security and emergency roadside assistance, but offer a platform for wider communications and logistical solutions. For the private motorist AVL is a mobile safety and security service for himself, his passengers, and his vehicle. It offers additional facilities for data and voice communications with on-line information, road side assistance and other help services. To the commercial operator AVL is a bespoke fleet management and monitoring service from an in house terminal and 24 hour back up from a central service bureau. Roadside service and support can be bundled into the contract with any number of other offered services. An integral part of the system is cost effective, real-time, two way data transmissions with the options of hard copy print out and voice communications. In the marine industry, these systems can provide a coastal security, anchor watch and monitoring service with immediate access to breakdown and emergency services. Vessels, which are usually left unattended for long periods of time, can be provided with a 24 hour monitoring service against criminal or natural emergencies.
