The Prochip/Prometheus research programme on active automobile safety has yielded some promising results in obstacle detection, with the development of infrared and microwave sensors, and adaptation and evaluation work on multisensorial fusion algorithms for real-time danger analysis. The Prochip car is now to be adapted to accommodate new mechanical sensors (steering wheel angle, pedal position, speed and acceleration) for detecting different hypovigilance levels. Initial results from current work on hypovigilance detection, under the European SAVE programme, indicate that researchers are now close to establishing the feasibility of this kind of system, which shows measurable efficacy.
