It is only possible to eliminate (or virtually eliminate) the basic differences between the different drive layouts across a very wide range of dynamic driving conditions by employing electronic driving aids, such as ABS (Anti-lock Brake System), traction control (ASR), and in particular the dynamic driving control (FDR). These systems are designed to modulate the braking and tractive forces for improved handling stability. This represents a major step towards simplifying the control task performed by the driver: in the closed loop control system consisting of the driver, the vehicle and the road, there is an increasing tendency for parts of the control function to be transferred from the driver to the electronic system in the vehicle in order to make the driver's task easier. The electronic driving aids employed in the Audi models currently in production, including ABS and EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) for front-wheel drive and quattro models, and electronic traction control for front-wheel drive will soon be supplemented by a dynamic driving control which was developed in close cooperation with Bosch. This gives the driver not only improved basic ABS and ASR functions in situations where the dynamic longitudinal forces are critical (such as full braking and acceleration), but also active assistance in situations where the lateral forces become critical. This system is being initially introduced on a four-wheel drive vehicle, and naturally retains all the handling advantages and the high traction potential that the quattro configuration offers in comparison with two-wheel drive vehicles.
