This work shows that the addition of integral feedback to an active suspension system has both advantages and disadvantages. The ride performance of the vehicle is degraded over the optimal active system but not to the extent that the performance is inferior to the passively suspended vehicle. The advantage is attitude control of the vehicle body, and the maintenance of the full workspace regardless of load conditions. Keeping the vehicle body flat with respect to the road surface has two main effects. The ride is probably subjectively preferable as body motions are reduced from the drivers viewpoint, and also the handling of the vehicle will be perceived as more confident as a result of the body remaining flat during cornering. Taking both these aspects of the integral feedback system into account it can be concluded that the performance of the self levelling controlled suspension represents an advance over the standard optimal active system as it addresses the additional problem of body attitude control. The LQR method of obtaining the feedback gains for the system is a relatively simple means of obtaining a good controller. To continue the work it is intended to look at using robust control methods to be able to further tune the system's performance. Also, the aim of the work thus far has been to compare the relative performance of the different systems. All of this has used full state feedback. It is intended to investigate how well the suspension can be made to perform with the more practical limited state feedback situation.
