In today's commercial vehicle a situation of excessive driver distraction is facing caused by a continuously increasing amount of information: From the traffic situation, i.e. the vehicle environment and from a multitude of monitoring displays and communication devices, i.e. from the vehicle itself. Each new information and communication system till now required its own additional display and individual actuation. This leads to inadequate reading possitions and control elements outside the driver's optimum range of operation. Integrated driver information management systems for commercial vehicles offer a possible solution when compared to existing systems. Characteristics of this system are integration of display and communication systems, hierarchical representation of information adapted to the individual driver requirements. The integration of display and communication systems is characterised by a graphical screen for combined representation of a multitude of different functions and information, as well as, a bus system for networking the individual systems to provide an expandable modular architecture (open system).
