The microstrip antenna is a good candidate for a SAR antenna at C-band and X-band frequencies as it meets the requirements for bandwidth, crosspolar and gain. It is relatively unaffected by temperature as its bandwidth is broad enough to tolerate effects caused by temperature. In addition, the manufacture of such an antenna is significantly cheaper when compared to other radiators. The processes developed at DASA Dornier are quick and repeatable. The light weight of the antenna (3 kg per square meter, including connectors but without backing structure) makes it particularly attractive for space applications.
