Future X-band SAR instruments with active phased array antennas are presently under development for space applications. This paper describes the general SAR instrument design considerations, and the lay-out of the proposed next generation SAR. The actual results from measurements, simulations and concept trade-offs for a complete SAR instrument show that such an instrument will be feasible for a space application. However, the technology has to be further developed in order to improve overall added efficiency and the performance of the subsystems.
