This paper introduces and explains the design and construction of a power converter for a hybrid electric vehicle. The converter isolates the auxiliary power unit (APU) from load transients thus improving the emissions performance of the APU. Furthermore, the converter allows the APU to operate at a stable power and speed for best efficiency. The fast response and high conversion efficiency of this converter justifies its addition within the hybrid vehicle. The quick response of this converter to load transients eliminates the need for the engine and generator to withstand high peak torques and currents. This method of control will allow the use of lighter and smaller engines and generators in auxiliary power units, eventually leading to less expensive hybrid vehicles overall.
