There are advantages to driving airbag squib ignitors with AC current. These advantages will be investigated and compared with the present practice with an eye toward discovering how to implement this technology in a cost- and safety-conscious way. As in everything else, there are trade-offs to be made before system implementation. The firing circuits must be checked for safety reasons to ensure that no faults are present in the redundant circuit and that the circuit is ready to fire. Otherwise the operator is notified to replace an inoperative module. Another condition is that chassis ground may be at different potentials such that a significant voltage may be experienced between a ground-faulted squib and the driver module. This voltage may be significant enough to fire the squib. A good squib driver solution will find an optimum location within these constraints. This paper will examine how AC and switchmode devices can meet the requirements. AC squib firing circuits are discussed with the object of improving the safety and reliability of squib firing circuits while reducing the cost. This overview concentrates on conceptual issues.
