Several possible solutions for axial flux wheel motor drives for Electric Vehicles (EVs) are investigated. As a case study, a small electric city car has been chosen and a 10 kW motor for each wheel has been selected for the comparison between the different motors types. Among the different solutions, the axial flux interior PM motors seem to be the best compromise in terms of efficiency, weight, compactness and capability characteristics.
