Diagnostics for the 21st century will be driven to provide improved combat availability of vehicles and reduced life-cycle maintenance costs; all within the confines of a two level or less maintenance system. The diagnostics of tomorrow must be designed to be relevant, practical and productive. The paper will briefly address some of the current problems of today's maintenance environment, suggest a roadmap for an effective maintenance system of tomorrow, and provide guidance on an implementation plan. The authors address in particular the diagnostic architectures of combat vehicles, viable maintenance practices and concepts, and the applicability of existing and future Test Maintenance and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE).
