In 1994, a task force on System Architecture and Traffic Control Integration (SATIN) was created to harmonise architecture results of the European Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT) Programme. Due to a heightened interest in the issue of system architecture, the work of SATIN was extended in 1995 which should help the preparation of a global coordination activity on system architecture in the Transport Telematics sector of the 4th Framework Programme, the new European Programme for Research and Technological Development. The purpose of this paper is to present the main outcome of SATIN's work together with some views on the future activities that are likely to be put in place in Europe in this area of research.
