A simple way of ITS highway system communication with vehicles is to use laser optics. During each passage through a system information exchange booth (SIEB), without the vehicle stopping or slowing down, 106 bytes can be exchanged virtually error free in 0.2 second, under all weather and traffic conditions. The 106 bytes is more than sufficient to cover all ITS information exchange needs, including automated toll collection, and information on hotels, restaurants, traffic and best routes, emergency, share ride, public transportation, and also information needed for commercial fleet management.
