The authors have developed a new traffic signal control method. This method changes signal phase timely by depending on the volume of traffic inflow which is predicted by entropy function. The entropy function allows to predict the current traffic volume without time lag from only one frame of traffic flow image taken with TV camera. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed by field tests at a signalized intersection in Yokohama city, Japan. The tests show that the proposed method can reduce the average delay per vehicle by not less than 50 % as compared with the existing control system. This paper also explains the method applying the proposed method to area control to maintain the signal offset.
