The field of soft computing encompasses fuzzy logic as well as other methodologies such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, and uncertainty management. It is expected that soft computing techniques will eventually become as common and prevalent as traditional methods of computer science. In the next few years it is expected that soft computing will grow as a source of methods to develop intelligent computational systems for space applications. The GARIC architecture is discussed, which provides a general approach for developing intelligent systems, starting with the available prior knowledge of the experts in the form of fuzzy rules and refining this knowledge on the basis of the reinforcements obtained while experimenting with the system. GARIC is an example of a hybrid neuro-fuzzy system. Alternative hybrid systems can be developed using other soft computing techniques, such as genetic algorithms.
